“Connecting today. Creating tomorrow” to make the world a better place

Joint steps to make the world a better place through the technology and sustainable development goals were discussed at the Social Good Summit Istanbul, which was organized by the cooperation of United Nations Development Programme and Türk Telekom. Renowned names from public institutions, NGOs, art, business, media, fashion and design, academic and sports came together in the Summit.

Social Good Summit’s 2016 Turkey event, which was organized by UNDP and supported by Türk Telekom in its Turkey and New York organizations last year, took place at Istanbul on September 29th.

The Social Good Summit asked the question, “What kind of world do I want to live in by the year 2030?” and this year’s theme was ‘Connecting today. Creating tomorrow.” Around 700 people participated in Turkey gathering of the summit, which is organized in more than 80 countries, ranging from New York to Nairobi, at around the same times. Thousands of people supported the summit on the social media by sharing what kind of world they want to live in.

 

60 speakers in 30 panels discussed the ‘future’ in a single day

In Social Good Summit’s Istanbul gathering; the participants discussed how to benefit the digital world’s opportunities. Attendees also shared their ideas about creating an equal world for everyone through technology and the changing dynamics as a result of the new media. Around 60 panelists mentioned on topics like social entrepreneurship, corporate digital responsibility, sustainable cities, inclusive business models and sustainable fashion in 30 panels, within 6 hours.

 

UN Turkey Resident Coordinator Kamal Malhotra: “People want to be a part of this new agenda’s actualization”

Speaking at the event, UN Turkey Resident Coordinator Kamal Malhotra underlined the importance he gives to the power of technology, new media and communication in achieving the UN and UNDP’s global goals. Malhotra continued his speech as follows: “The main messages of the reports on the Sustainable Development Goals (Global Goals) reflect the outcomes of global consultations and the message is clear: People want to be a part of realizing this new agenda. They are expecting the governments and business world to fulfill their promises and commitments. These individuals also underline the importance of participation, inclusiveness and partnerships.”

This year, at the Social Good Summit 2016 Istanbul event, numerous names from different sectors and corporations took stage. Microsoft Turkey General Manager Murat Kansu, Intel Turkey General Manager Burak Aydın, Cisco Turkey General Manager Cenk Kıvılcım, famous actor and founder of “İhtiyaç Haritası” project Mert Fırat, well known celebrity and producer Saba Tümer, award winning designer Hatice Gökçe, pianist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Gülsin Onay, Hitachi Data Systems Turkey Chief Executive Serdar Sayar and a journalist of the Guardian newspaper Naomi Larsson were some of the panelists.
